Title:   THE COSMIC MICROWAVE BACKGROUND ANISOTROPIES AND POLARIZATION

Abstract:  The Universe is expanding and its dynamics is described by the cosmological model based on Einstein’s general relativity. However, the nature of the two main components of the Universe, the dark energy and dark matter, as well as the physics of the early phases of the Universe happening a fraction of second after the Big-Bang are not understood today. The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) is a relic emission filling the whole Universe at the temperature of 2.75K today and was released 380000 years after the Big-Bang when the electrons and protons combined to form the first atoms. The small temperature fluctuations of the CMB, of the order of 100 mK, are a wonderful probe providing information about those unknown quantities, constraining the physical conditions in the primordial Universe, in particular with the measurement of the polarization of the emission. In this seminar I will introduce the cosmological model, the physics of the CMB and present recent observations of the CMB in particular with the Planck satellite.
